Lesson 2: Where in the world Key Stage 1-2: Geography, Computing

Investigating Shackleton's hut and his Nimrod expedition

Antarctica is a frozen, windswept continent, with a climate so extreme and a location so remote that no humans can live permanently on the land mass.

But where is Antarctica? What land masses are nearby?

How long would it take to get to Antarctica if you were travelling from England? What different types of transport would you need to use in modern times and how might your journey be different taking it in the Heroic Age of Scientific Discovery?

How does the location of Antarctica affect life there for humans, wildlife and animals?

What happens to the sea in this part of the world and how does this impact on how Antarctica is used by humans?

Purpose of study:

Geography - Equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth's key physical and human processes.

Developing a growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

Computing - Ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology.

National Curriculum Aims / Attainment Targets Activity focus

Geography:

  • Develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places - both terrestrial and marine - including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes.
  • Interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
  • Communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length.
  • Using Google maps to zoom into Shackelton's hut.
  • Take notes of objects seen in interior of the hut.
  • Map out route to hut.
  • Investigate reasons for failure of the journey.

Computing:

  • Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
KS2 - select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information.
