Lesson 1: Packing for an expedition Key Stage 1 & 2: English

Investigating clothing worn by polar explorers on Scott's expeditions

What to pack for an expedition?

Polar expedition takes time; there is the journey to get far enough south, and then when you arrive, you will often stay for many weeks or months.

Polar explorers need to think very carefully about what equipment and possessions they need and want to have with them.

Discuss with the pupils the length of time that the different expeditions took and how long Robert Scott was therefore away from home.

Captain Robert Scott's Terra Nova Expedition started in June 1910 and ended in January 1912.

What items would you take if you were going to be away from home for 2 years? Don't forget that most polar explorers had to personally carry what they took. How does this affect your choice?
