Lesson 4: Keeping our feet warm Key Stage 2 & Key Stage 2: History

Investigating clothing worn by polar explorers on Scott's expeditions

What is the most appropriate footwear for polar exploration? How does it differ from everyday footwear?

Ernest Shackleton had been asked to help in the design of the boots as he was an experienced explorer and knew what a good boot needed to provide comfort and durability in the Polar Regions.

The materials and manufacturing techniques have changed significantly over the last 150 years; modern day polar footwear offers significantly more protection from the ice and cold than early explorers' equipment.
